What is Twitter?

It is an American social media company that was created by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams on 21st  march 2006 (15 Years ago) and officially launch in July of the same year. On March 21, 2006, Jack auctioned off the first tweet, as -- "just setting up my twttr."

Bird App: Twitter is a microblogging platform that allows you to send and receive short messages known as tweets. Tweets are limited to 140 characters and can contain links to relevant websites, graphics, and information. Twitter users follow other people. If you follow someone, their tweets will appear on your Twitter 'timeline.' You have the option of following persons and organizations who share your personal and professional interests.

Only registered members can tweet, retweet, like, quote tweet, and DM (Direct message) while unregistered members only can see the tweets. In 2021 Twitter has also introduced a voice chat feature for Twitter known as “Space” which is widely being used you can join it from Android and iPhone while the Twitter team is working to introduce the desktop version very soon. Currently, iPhone users only can host the space with 600 followers.

You may write your own tweets or retweet information that someone else has posted. Retweeting allows information to be fast and effectively shared with a lot of people. Because Twitter launched as a SIMS-based platform, the 140-character restriction was implemented by cellphone companies rather than Twitter.

Why use Twitter?

Twitter has gained popularity among academics, students, politicians, officials, governments, Journalists, and the general public. Many users experienced difficulty understanding what Twitter was and how to use it, but it has now become the social media platform of choice for many.

Because of the concise nature of tweets, Twitter is popular among smartphone users who do not want to read large content items on-screen.

Twitter allows you to do the following:

  • You may simply advertise your research by sharing links to your blog posts, journal publications, and news items, for example.
  • Tweets and retweets allow you to instantly reach a big number of people.
  • Build ties with professionals and other followers by following the activity of other professionals in your industry.
  • stay up to date with new news and developments and share on with others
  • reach out to new people immediately
  • Seek and provide comments on your own work as well as feedback to others.
  • Follow and participate in conversations about events that you can't attend in person, such as conferences, to express who you are as a person.

 

What should you tweet about?

What type of content you will share as a tweet depends on your account type as an individual or personal, Organization, Group, Project.

If you have a personal Twitter account, you may vary tweets about your research with tweets about other things that interest you, like hobbies, news articles, and general observations. Non-academic areas of your life can help you become a much more attractive person to follow.

If you are tweeting on behalf of an organization, institution, or group, you may restrict your tweets to research-related topics. Twitter is a relatively informal communication tool, so don't be scared to tweet in a friendly, kind, and hilarious way.
